Artist Statement: Sketches
In her watercolour sketches, Joan is capturing moments in time, enclosing the areas with a continuous line around each colour; each colour is significant in its representation of time.
Joan uses colour to portray the sensations of nature as opposed to the actuality of nature itself, capturing those precious moments in time and more concerned with the transient effects.
She draws with colour which is her visual language and enclosing colour with line which has a hypnotic effect, an expression of the unconscious. She conveys the emotions of the impersonal and sometimes disregarded things, like a fallen branch or uprooted tree giving them personal meanings which will affect people in many different ways. The use of the joined up line is enclosing her thoughts and emotions as if catching that moment of thought in time. Joan uses a wide range of media including acrylic, water colour and ink gel pens.
Her works are both allusive and symbolic
She is encouraging people to see the environment in a very different way.
